Hong Kong craft brewery completes expansion to new double 20-hectolitre facility
Yardley Brothers, a leading Hong Kong craft brewery, has announced that it has moved all its brewing, barrel-aging and management operations to a new facility in Kwai Chung from its previous seven-hectolitre Kwai Hing location.
Spread across 1.5 floors of an industrial building, the new brewhouse more than triples its production capacity, to a unique double 20-hectolitre system, allowing 4,000 total litres of brewing capacity at any time.
The new location also includes a significant increase in tank capacity for storage and fermentation, with tank capacities ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 litres and space for a significant increase in capacity for its barrel programme, which currently has close to 80 barrels.
The first beer produced at the new space was Yardley Brothers’ award-winning double dry hopped Machine Men Pale Ale. In November 2023, the brewery held a number of special events to mark the opening of the new operation, including a November 15th launch event at Yardleys Taproom in Central of two new three-year, barrel-aged Flanders Red Ales.
The brewery also held their 8th Anniversary Event last November 19th slated as “Quit Your Job Day”, with free pours of their “Quit Your Job” saison for anyone who brought in a recent resignation letter.
Yardley Brothers started operations eight years ago in a small shack on the side of the road on Hong Kong’s Lamma Island before moving to its Kwai Hing location to expand its output and range.
The brewery has grown rapidly over the years, opening the company’s two taprooms, Yardley’s Taproom on Peel Street and The Beer Shack on Lamma Island, as well as building a wide distribution in bottle shops, fine restaurants and bars throughout Hong Kong.
A key factor to its success has been its innovation in producing creative unusual, quality beer. A few years ago, the company launched its barrel-aging programme, one of the largest running in the territory. Since its inception, the brewery has amassed about 80 barrels from around the world, ranging from French chardonnay to Canadian maple syrup among many others.
It has also entered into international collaborations with other brewers. An example is its participation in the Sour City Project, an innovative venture jointly run by Sandport Beer and Baan Bangkok Brewing Co., and managed by Group B Beer, a distributor and facilitator, which highlighted the unique sour flavours from both Hong Kong and Thailand by showcasing them using unique craft brews.
