After winning social media praise for helping a fellow citizen open a beer bottle in an airport lounge in February, New Zealand’s enigmatic Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is back in the beer news.
Wellington based brewery Double Vision Brewing has launched a beer named in the Prime Minister’s honour: ‘Juice Cinda’.
The hazy New Zealand IPA was created as a “celebration of kindness, resilience and local support” for Ardern’s leadership during the country’s widely-recognised response to COVID-19.
The new beer has received wide media coverage in the New Zealand press and despite a handful of grumpy complaints about being ‘too political’, it has been largely praised by beer-guzzling punters.
Rather than the beer solely being a symbol of support for Ms Ardern’s leadership, the brewery is using the publicity to promote a positive cause that has attracted much attention in recent years in New Zealand: young people’s mental health.
Double Vision are donating 50% of their profits from sales of the beer to mental health charity I Am Hope.
They’re tapping into the PR around the Juice Cinda beer too by encouraging non-drinkers to donate via a crowdfunding campaign tied in with the beer. At the time of writing, they had succeeded in raising $1260 New Zealand Dollars from public donations.
