Singapore Brewers Get Back In The Festival Spirit

Popular local taproom Good Luck have partnered with Japanese restaurant Gyu San to launch the Urban Beer Festival which will bring together more than 20 independent craft breweries, 13 of which are Singapore-based small batch craft beer producers.

This first edition of what is hoped to be an annual festival will be held on the 3rd & 4th March at the spectacular Urban Park at Guoco Tower, a landscaped 150,000 square foot green oasis in the heart of the city.

It will also be the first beer festival of this scale to be held in the city state since Singapore lifted the majority of it’s pandemic restrictions in mid 2022.

In celebration of the return of beer festivals the Singapore craft breweries involved have come together for the first (and biggest) post-pandemic collaboration brew for the show.

The breweries have pooled their combined experience and love for brewing to conceive a special festival collaboration beer — a fruity and smooth rice cream ale powered by Kveik (an ancient Scandinavian brewing yeast).

Named the Mash-Up Mixed Tape the brew has also been generously hopped with popular Sabro, Talus, and Zappa hop varietals. Everybody who attends the festival will be lucky enough to get a taste of this brew as every festival ticket purchased will come with a free welcome glass of the amber nectar.

“Beer festivals are a great way to bring brewers together, but a collab brew takes the cake!” said Mitch Gribov, Head Brewer of Singapore’s original microbrewery Brewerkz who are involved in the project. “We harnessed the resources and thinking power of several breweries and quickly put together a tasty “rojak” of ideas. Asked to brew a festival’s show starter, we all wanted something easy drinking and impressionable, but fuss free!”

“Rojak” means “mixed” in Malay and is typically used as a name for a traditional mixed salad of fruits, vegetables and peanut sauce commonly found in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The other breweries involved in the festival are 1925 Brewing, Archipelago Brewery, Brewlander, Crust Group, District Brewers, Lion Brewery Co, Lion City Meadery, Off Day Beer Co, Rye & Pint Brewery, Specific Gravity, Sunbird Brewing Company and That Singapore Beer Project.

The festival will also feature imported beers from Bad Decisions Imports, The Drinking Partners, Ollie and Watering Hole, local distributors for Australian breweries Rocky Ridge and Cheeky Monkey.

Collectively, the brewers and importers will present a selection of over 100 varieties of lagers, pale ales, session IPAs, stouts and sours, including some Asia Beer Championship and other award-winning brews.

Completing the festival experience, Gyu San will serve up their famous wagyu fat-fried katsu sandos, alongside food booths by modern Japanese restaurant Wagatomo, Frenchie Wine Bar and L’Arte Pizza.
