An installation for selling beer using stock-market style, real time pricing becomes a big tourist draw in China’s beer capital
A three-metre-tall interactive beer installation which blends technology, entertainment, and commerce in a novel concept now dubbed the ‘Qingdao Beer Exchange’ has become a major attraction in Qingdao’s Taidong pedestrian street. The city is considered as Chia’s brewing capital.
The 360-degree smart installation allows visitors to influence the real-time prices of 30 different beer varieties by scanning QR codes when they make purchases. The concept mirrors that of systems found in stock exchanges, where prices are adjusted dynamically, based on demand, thus creating an engaging and gamified beer-buying experience.
At the core of the experience is a dynamic pricing system that recalibrates beer prices every 10 minutes, based on sales volume. Prices can fluctuate by up to 10 percent, with all prices resetting to a base level at the start of each day. The real-time price changes are displayed on the column’s digital interface, adding to the financial market parody.
The tourist attraction surged in popularity during the recent Dragon Boat Festival holiday from May 31 to June 2 in China, drawing more than 10,000 daily visitors. On peak days, beer sales surpassed 1.2 million millilitres, according to local authorities.
The Qingdao Beer Exchange is the latest effort to bolster local tourism and nightlife in the city by combining elements of retail innovation and social entertainment. The installation has proven particularly appealing to younger consumers and tourists looking for interactive, experience-driven venues.
City officials see the success of the beer exchange as a template for fusing technology with local cultural products to drive foot traffic and economic activity in commercial zones.
