Manila-based Boondocks Brewing and Taipei’s Redpoint Brewing launch new dubbel

Released on 1 April 2024, the Manila-based Boondocks Brewing Co. and Taipei’s Redpoint Brewing Co. have collaborated on the production of a new beer called ‘Dalandan Dubbel’. Dalandan is a type of orange grown in the Philippines.

The beer boasts a 7% ABV, and is crafted with the zest of dried orange peels, which adds a citrus twist to its full-bodied maltiness. The Dalandan Dubbel is packaged in both bottles and kegs, and will initially be available in the Taiwan market.

The collaboration was conceived at the 2023 Brew Asia Conference held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in late October last year over a few brews between the founder-brewers, Fred Calope of Boondocks and Spencer Jemelka of Redpoint.

“On my end, over the past year or so, I’ve really been doing the rounds in Asia to understand where the craft beer industry is going; what other beer markets in the region are undergoing as far as successes and challenges are concerned; and how we can all learn from one another,” says Calope.

“As far as teaming up with Redpoint is concerned, I found a lot of commonalities with them in how we view craft beer as a business, and how we can continue to grow in our respective markets. Spending time with Spencer and Doug in Taipei last year, and then hanging out at Brew Asia in HCMC really got me geeked to hash out the details and to make this collab happen.”

The new beer is Redpoint’s first dubbel. “It was our first time brewing a dubbel at Redpoint so we relied heavily on Fred’s experience of brewing Belgian styles,” says Jemelka. “We’re really happy about how it came out, and we’re already in talks about me maybe getting down to Boondocks Brewing for a Philippines collab brew-cation!”
