Inagi city’s government teams up with Haneda Sky Brewing to produce a beer to boost the city’s curry credentials
The Japanese city of Inagi has teamed up with Haneda Sky Brewing in Tokyo’s Ota City to develop a new craft beer to be named “Inagi Curry Ale”, which will be flavoured with curry spices. The new beer project was launched at the restaurant attached to the brewery on 19 July, at an event attended by Inagi Mayor Katsuhiro Takahashi and other dignitaries. The project is part of the Inagi Municipal Government programme to revitalise the city through various curry-related initiatives.
Inagi Curry Ale contains three types of spices typically used in curry – cumin, cardamom and coriander – which are ground into powder and added during the brewing process.
Starting on 19 September, the new ale will go on sale at the Haneda Sky Brewing restaurant, and at the tourist facility Inagi Hasshin Kichi Pear Terrace in Inagi, at a price of JPY880 (US$6) per 330ml serving.
The beer development project is part of an initiative promoted by the Yoishigotookoshi Network, which is made up of credit unions across Japan. The network promotes regional communities by developing products using local specialties.
Haneda Sky Brewing, owned by Taiho Co, has developed a reputation for contract brewing in these types of projects. It has already collaborated with municipalities and local organisations from 15 of the 47 Japanese prefectures to create beers with unique tastes and aromas.
