Two of Hong Kong’s most prominent craft brands, Yardley Brothers Craft Brewery and Double Haven Brewing, have partnered to brew a special release beer to inspire the cleanup of the region’s beaches.

Trashwave California Common Steam Beer (4.3% ABV) aims to raise awareness of beach and marine pollution and how the community can safely come together to help improve the condition of such cherished recreational areas with the added incentive of free beer.

The beer has been made available in cans and on draft for purchase throughout Hong Kong. In addition, as an extra incentive for beachgoers to help in the clean-up effort, cans of Trashwave California Common Steam Beer are redeemable for free by those who have filled a large bag with beach trash and posted a selfie of their beach cleaning adventures to social media, tagging both breweries and using the #Trashwave hashtag.

The free and tasty reward can be collected at Yardley Brothers’ home bar, The Beer Shack, on Lamma Island, Momentai in Sai Kung, and Treehouse in Central.

The can’s design also features a QR code with instructions on how to responsibly dispose of/recycle collected trash.

“We had fun collaborating with our friends at Double Haven to flex our creative muscles and brew this unfamiliar style of beer for responsible Hong Kong beach-goers,” said Yardley Brothers Co-Founder Luke Yardley.

“As a long-term Lamma Island resident and one who enjoys a day at the beach with my young family, raising the importance of beach and marine cleanliness is a passion of mine. A quick beach cleanup with friends is something we hope this new brew inspires, and who doesn’t love a free beer?”

Often referred to as “steam beer,” the California common beer style is brewed with lager yeast but fermented at higher ale temperatures.  Trashwave California Common Steam Beer is the duo’s unique take on the style.

Less bitter than a traditional steam beer, and with the addition of fresh lemon peel, the new socially-responsible brew boasts a fruity, crisp, and refreshing kick to quench summer thirsts after cleaning trash-strewn beaches.

During the brewing process, newly launched experimental Talus™ hops from the U.S. Pacific Northwest were used to give the beer its distinct aroma of pink grapefruits, citrus rinds, tropical fruits, and sage.

“At Double Haven, our environmental footprint is considered in all decisions. Whether it is forgoing glass bottles for more recyclable can packaging, making our T-shirts from sustainable materials (RPET), or working with manufacturers to select processes that do the least harm, we are actively trying to find ways to do better,” said Double Haven Brewing Owner and Director Scott Powrie.

“As a member of 1% For The Planet, where we give 1% of all our revenue back to organisations working to help the planet, Double Haven is committed to ensuring we leave our beaches in better condition for the next generation. Plus, this is a fantastic community-based and fun way to do it!”

The Trashwave campaign will run while stocks last.
