Hong Kong brewer pledges 1% of sales to environment organization

19th April 2021

We can all be 1% better and local Hong Kong company, Double Haven, is leading the way in showing the beverage industry how.

To celebrate Earth Day, Hong Kong brewing company Double Haven has announced that it has become Hong Kong’s first beverage company to join the prestigious 1% Percent For The Planet.

Established in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% For The Planet members have given more than $265 million to approved environmental non-profit partners who are working towards a better future for our planet.

“A huge part of our mission at Double Haven is to encourage people to get outside and enjoy the incredible environment that Hong Kong’s country parks and beaches have to offer, but also to actively be involved in preserving and protecting that environment. By joining 1% For The Planet and giving 1% of our revenue to environmental non-profits, we are working to be part of the solution, and not the problem.” Leigh Powrie, Double Haven’s CEO

Asia has long been perceived as the manufacturing epicentre of the world. Double Haven is shifting the industry narrative and heralding in a new era where they hope sustainability and environmental protection will become part of everyday boardroom discussions.

And, their recent visual overhaul reinforces this mission. Double Haven is boasting a new, vibrant look and feel that showcases unique Hong Kong landscapes and aims to inspire people to get out into Hong Kong’s nature parks and beaches.

“We feel we have an obligation as a Hong Kong made product to showcase all the incredible natural beauty of Hong Kong. We hope that Asian producers will lead by example, becoming the innovators and caretakers of our global eco-system through better practices and a commitment to placing the planet on equal footing to profits.” states co-owner, Scott Powrie.

“At Double Haven, our environmental footprint is considered in all decisions. Whether it is forgoing glass bottles for more recyclable can packaging, making our T-shirts from sustainable materials (RPET) or working with manufacturers to select processes that do the least harm, we are actively trying to find ways to do better, 1% at a time.”

Around the region more and more breweries have been embarking on ambitious environmental initiatives. Only recently Singapore’s Lion Brewery Co. launched their “1 Keg = 1 Tree” campaign, pledging support for an organization replanting areas that have been cleared in the Borneo rainforests.
