Japanese brewer creates unique IPA blend for Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day

Japan’s Far Yeast Brewing Company, headquartered in Kosuge Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, has taken part in this year’s Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day event. Held on 8 March 2024, International Women’s Day, the event is an initiative led by the American Pink Boots Society to raise awareness of the role of women in the beer industry.

Breweries from around the world participate by brewing a unique beer in recognition of the cause, and by making donations to help fund the Society’s various scholarships and its other educational initiatives.

Far Yeast chose a rye IPA for ‘Right Step’, its Pink Boots blend, brewed exclusively for the event. According to the brewer, the slight spiciness derived from the rye when blended with the vivid tropical flavours imparted from hop varieties Ahtanum, El Dorado, HBC 638 and Idaho 7, and the earthy aroma of Sabro; are reminiscent of a gorgeous and powerful woman.

Right Step will be sold exclusively at the Far Yeast Brewing online store and its directly-managed stores in Japan. The proceeds raised from sales of Right Step will be donated to support the Pink Boots Society.

Far Yeast Brewing has considered upholding diversity and inclusion as an important value since the foundation of the business, and this project was carried out by the Far Yeast Brewing Women’s Team which drew on the talents of two female brewers for the project. One is from Taiwan who arrived on a working holiday last July, and one is from Italy who joined the team as a guest brewer last November.

Other female staff participated from a variety of disciplines: from planning the project to brewing the beer. This diversity is reflected in the floral motifs of the label design for the brew. In addition to the mimosa flower, which is a symbol of International Women’s Day, there are also flower motifs associated with the countries of origin of the members involved in the project, Italy, Taiwan, and Japan.

The label design is by Naoko Kamiyama, an illustrator who lives in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture.
