Leyd Brewing Co., the third entrant into Malaysia’s fast-growing craft beer scene, has begun distributing in Peninsular Malaysia.
The expansion to Western Malaysia is a major milestone in the country’s beer industry, given it is the first time a Sarawakian brewery has entered the Western Malaysian market.
Asia Brewers Network previously covered Leyd’s launch in early 2023 and since then the brewery has focused on ramping up domestic operations in Sarawak.
The brewery’s production facility is based in Sibu and operates with a 13hL brewhouse supported by six fermenters and two bright beer tanks.
Leyd’s has narrowed down their core range this year, focusing on four beers that have received the best initial market feedback: a Juicy Pale Ale, Air Hitam Stout, Haka New Zealand Pilsner and Dad Is The Reason Amber Lager.
“Expanding to West Malaysia has always been our top priority, as the craft beer scene is well-established and familiar to many West Malaysians, particularly those residing in Kuala Lumpur,” shares co-founder Jaan Yeh.
This move aligns with the brewery’s broader ambitions, which include participation in beer competitions like the Asia Beer Championship and future distribution throughout Southeast Asia.
While the brewery has expressed interest in eventual exports, their current focus remains on developing their domestic market presence through their core range of beers.
“As part of our future plans, we aim to eventually export our beers. However, we recognize the importance of establishing a strong presence in our own country before considering expansion overseas. Building a solid foundation domestically is our priority,” shares Mr Yeh.
Leyd’s launch in Kuala Lumpur took place at Battle of Bull (see photo below), a popular craft beer bar located in the southeastern suburb of Cheras, while other activities took place in downtown KL and Seremban, a city in the central state of Negeri Sembilan.
