The popular craft beer bar and Kopitiam hybrid, Orh Gao Taproom, located in District 10’s Serene Centre has announced its closure following the building’s redevelopment and lease renewal issues.
Singapore’s popular Orh Gao Taproom located in Serene Centre adjacent to the Botanic Gardens, has ceased operations on 12 July, because it has been unable to renew its lease following the building’s redevelopment. The craft beer bar and daytime Kopitiam hybrid disclosed the closure in a recent Instagram post, alleging that it had been “kicked out” despite past assurances that its lease would be extended. According to the taproom, it has engaged regularly with the landlord over the past year to find a new venue within the same building, but without success.
Since its launch in 2019, Orh Gao has operated as a Killiney Kopitiam outlet during the day serving kopi, kaya toast and local breakfast fare; then transforming into a cosy taproom in the evening, offering ten rotating beer taps complemented by a fridge stocked with local and international craft brews alongside Asian-inspired dishes.
Serene Centre was acquired in April 2024 for S$105 million (US$82.2 million) by Apricot Capital, the investment vehicle of the Teo family; and is currently undergoing a multimillion dollar enhancement led by its co-living real estate operator, The Assembly Place. Plans include revitalising retail spaces on the lower floors and converting the upper apartments into 86 co living units with shared kitchens, lounges and utility areas. Renovations began in April 2024 and were planned to be completed before the end of this year.
At the time of writing, Orh Gao Taproom had not announced any specific details on where it will be re-opening, but it has confirmed that it intends to continue in a new location at some point in the future.
