Brew King Philippines returns this August!
23 of the Philippines’ top craft breweries will do battle on Saturday 23rd August at Pierre’s Cellar, Quezon City, with the winner pronounced Brew King Philippines 2023.
This freestyle brewing challenge, organized by the Asia Brewers Network, is designed to give commercial brewers the freedom to express themselves without the traditional boundaries of beerstyle guidelines.
One brew to rule them all
Upon registration brewers were given an hero ingredient and tasked to brew one beer according to a competition concept brief. They can produce any beerstyle they like (recognized or not) to showcase a designated hero ingredient and concept in their beer.
This year the hero ingredient is the Zappa™ hop, grown exclusively by CLS Farms in the USA’s Yakima Valley, and brewers have been asked to brew a beer that characterizes the “Pure, Wild & American” attitude of the neomexicanus hop variety.

The brews entered will then be judged by both the brewers themselves and at a public taste-off according to the brewer’s notes of what they were aiming to produce.
The first Brew King Philippines, run in 2022, used El Dorado hops as it’s hero ingredient and was won by Treeline Ales with their “Golden Sunshine Hazy Pale” – a beer which has since been adopted into their core range of beers at their popular Quezon City brewery taproom.
What to expect on the 5th August?
The Zappa™ hop invokes intense tropical flavors of passion fruit and mango coupled with spicy and herbal notes. Primarily brewed in American IPAs and Hazy IPAs, Zappa™ also expresses well in saisons, Mexican lagers, and other styles highlighting both fruity and spicy qualities … in other words – anything goes!
To help them with their brew competition sponsors CLS Farms have provided complimentary Zappa™ hops as well as technical support for any brewers requiring it.
Judging will be held over 2 rounds on the 5th August. The competing brewers will be invited to select the best 5 beers after which attendees at a public tasting event will be asked to vote for their favourite from these 5 brews.
The most popular beer as voted by the public will be proclaimed Philippines Brew King Philippines 2023! Prizes will also be awarded for 1st Runner-Up and Most Creative Brew.
